From the late 1800s till the mid 1900s many suggestions and ideas were proposed regarding the construction of a hotel near the Marselisborg forest. However, all ideas were quickly rejected because of various protests towards this project.
A century passed, until a local master mason named Anker Jakobsen, finally in 1965 by the City Council received a permission to build a hotel, given he was able to buy the half-timbered cottage ‘Frydenlund’. However, the purchase of the charming cottage was under the conditioned of being preserved as part of the hotel.
Hotel Marselis is designed by the famous Danish architects Friis & Moltke. Nevertheless, the buildings have received many protests from the citizens of Aarhus. A Danish newspaper once wrote an article stating the hotel to be “vandalism against one of the most beautiful forests in Denmark”.
Hotel Marselis opened in 1967. The grand opening took place on the land of Marselisborg where the Danish Royal Family’s summer residence, the Marselisborg Castle also is situated.
The hotel is characterized by its fabulous location on the beach, with the forest and Aarhus Beach Promenade leading to the Marina.
Hotel Marselis was Anker Jakobsen’s dream and life project. Anker Jakobsen took pride in his profession, and he would not accept factory-manufactured bricks, why he therefore insisted on every brick being hand-made. This is clearly shown in the many hundred thousands of bricks, used both on the outside and the inside of the hotel. Just as the pyramids in Egypt, not two bricks have the same size or shape.
Hotel Marselis was owned by the Jakobsen family until it was taken over by the international chain, Helnan International Hotels; founded by its President, Enan Galaly who came to Denmark the same year as the hotel was inaugurated.
Since the takeover, Helnan Marselis Hotel has continuously undergone renovations and expansions in a maritime modern style. This has made Helnan Marselis Hotel recognized as one of Denmark’s most attractive hotels with a unique location and high international standards. Helnan Marselis Hotel offers a restaurant, bar, terrace, indoor pool with sauna and fitness area as well as banquets- and convention facilities and parking facilities.
